The ChatGPT referral traffic decline of October 2026

Why ChatGPT referrals fell in analytics from 9 October 2026, what is reported and what is confirmed, and how to check your own site.

What happened

From Friday 9 October 2026, sites that track ChatGPT referrals saw them fall sharply. LLM Pulse measured ChatGPT sessions in GA4 about 46% lower between 9 and 11 October than on the same days of the previous two weeks, while total traffic on those sites stayed flat and referrals from Perplexity and Claude held steady. Graphite's CEO reported falls of 22% to 57% across sites with meaningful AI Assistant traffic, as summarised by Search Engine Journal.

The timing matches GPT-6, which began rolling out to paid ChatGPT plans on 7 October and to Free and Go users on 8 October.

The reports agree on the mechanism, though OpenAI hasn't published one:

  • No tag. Many links in GPT-6 answer text opened without utm_source=chatgpt.com, the tag ChatGPT's citations had carried since its search launched in 2024. Links in the Sources panel and shopping links kept it (Graphite, via Search Engine Journal).
  • No referrer. Adobe's Cedric Huesler reported that links opened in a new tab with a browser setting that withholds the referrer.
  • More bare links. Peec AI ran the same million prompts before and after the rollout and saw ChatGPT put a direct URL in 42% of responses, up from about 8–10%, without tags or referrers.

A visit with neither a tag nor a referrer looks exactly like someone typing your address, so GA4 and most analytics tools count it as Direct.

Lost visits, or lost labels?

Mostly lost labels, on the evidence so far:

  • Huesler compared about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits, 9–13 October against the week before. ChatGPT visits fell by about 31,000 a day while Direct rose by about 26,000 a day, and search traffic fell only 7% (Search Engine Journal). He described the data as early and sampled.
  • Total traffic on the sites LLM Pulse monitors didn't fall.

Not everything is settled. LLM Pulse points out that GPT-6's new interface may answer more questions inside the chat, which would mean fewer clicks, and analytics alone can't measure that. Huesler wrote that sources told him on 14 October it might be a bug, and later reports said tagging began returning around 15–16 October. Even if tags are back, the visits recorded as Direct since 9 October won't be relabelled.

What to check on your site

  1. Annotate 7–9 October 2026 in every report that shows AI or Direct traffic.
  2. Compare Direct on your top ChatGPT landing pages before and after 9 October. A rise there, while ChatGPT fell, is most likely the same visitors without a label.
  3. Look at outcomes, not the referral line. Sign-ups and conversions from those landing pages tell you whether you lost anything real.
  4. Measure the part analytics can't lose. Requests from ChatGPT-User, the agent OpenAI uses when someone asks ChatGPT about a page (OpenAI's documentation), reach your server whether or not the eventual click carries a tag.

How LogZuno handles referrer-less clicks

LogZuno's AI visibility reads your server's traffic, so it sees ChatGPT-User fetches, verified against OpenAI's published addresses. When a visit arrives with no referrer and no tag, LogZuno checks whether a verified ChatGPT fetch of the same page happened just before it. If it did, inside a window measured from your own tagged ChatGPT visits, the visit is shown as Likely ChatGPT, separately from proven ChatGPT visits. Each fetch can explain only one visit.

Questions

Did ChatGPT stop sending visitors?

The evidence so far points to a labelling change rather than lost visits: many ChatGPT links lost their tracking tag and referrer, so analytics tools filed those visits as Direct. Analysts also note GPT-6 may answer more questions without a click, which analytics can't measure.

Has OpenAI confirmed the cause?

Not publicly, as of 23 October 2026. Practitioners reported being told it might be a bug, and some trackers saw tags return from mid-October, but OpenAI hasn't published an explanation.
