Definition
A key performance indicator (KPI) is a number a team commits to moving because it reflects progress toward an important goal. Every KPI is a metric; few metrics are KPIs.
A good KPI
- Tied to a goal: activation rate for an onboarding goal, not total sign-ups.
- Actionable: the team can influence it.
- A rate or a trend, not a running total.
- Owned by one person or team.
How many
A team can focus on two or three. More than that, and none get attention.
